Saturday 11/15/08

Sometime in Spring, 2oo8

We are driving up the mountain, to the left you can see the entire desert land of New Mexico, to the left, a chain linked barrier protects the mountain from the posibility of a car smashing into it. The right side is beautiful, the road stretches for 20 miles, and you can see to the beginning. There is nothing but yellow sand spotted with green cactucs and dried brush, the wind tests our car, our ears all pop, we are driving at least 120 miles an hour and at this point I would gladly great death for this is why we are alive.

Passing through the peak of the mountain and over to the other side.

The land spreads out before us endlessly, the sun is now behind us, we are ahead of the day, it is beautiful. The land streaches for hundreds of miles spotted with brave new towns, strip malls to house fast food resuraunts for the passing truck drivers, pioneers, and locals who work at the nearby coal mills and textile plants. The car coasts down the mountain with no need for the gas pedal , it doesn't wind like the mountains in the northeast, it drives straight down from the top to the bottom with no need for the gas at all.

Where Have I been?

Where does the time go?  I'm almost 20, I feel like the last time I rode my bike was two hundred years ago, in reality, it was about a year ago, actually, maybe only 6 months.  I'm getting incredibly anxious.  I need a bike, really badly.  I need one so so badly.  A bike is an extension of me, it's on par with my arteries and my lungs, and heart.  Something drastic is missing now that I do not have my bike, something very very incredibly drastic.  I sit here, growing old, one year from my prime, and I do not have something next to me, under me, that has carried my weight for over 15 years.  I am missing a very, very important piece of me, and I will not be the same until I have it back.

I gather that it will cost nearly $300 to send it.

In the meantime, I have gathered a compilation of some of my favorite video parts.  This is my life.  This is how I grew up, and this is how I will age.  Nothing can hold me back from that.

PS:  Lakai intro thrown in because, wow.  Just watch it.

people are crazy.

what is it that makes people so angry? Why do people get mad about the silliest things?

where i work (and you'd never have guessed it) the customers that come in (not all of course) are sizzling hot with anger!

i work at a frame shop. A frame shop of all places. you might think of people being angry at a automated message system of an insurance company, or even a restaurant for getting an order wrong... but a frame shop? but it's true. people come in, and you'd be sure they are about to bite someone's head off. Muttering things under their berth...

"hello! welcome to ------ how are you today" says I,
"ugh.. fine.. i guess" they mutter in return. the anger swells in their eyes.
ok, how do i respond to that? "is there anything i can help you find?"
"nope just looking" they reply in that do i look like i need or even want your help?!! RAWR! kinda way
i retreat.

or the famous phone calls.

ring... ring...

"thank you for calling ---- how may i help you?" i chirp,
"i was calling to check on the sta - i already know how this conversation is going to end - tus of an order" (it's always the same.. every damn time)
I reply "my i have your last name"
they give it to me.. i don't hear at first, bad connection.
"i'm sorry, what was that?"
again the say it. LOUDER
"and your first name?"
they mutter something.. begins with an "A" close enough.
"hold on one moment"
press the hold button.
check on the order.
not finished.
.......
get back on the phone.
"im sorry sir/ma'am. it's not quite finished yet. (this is where i explain the problem in detail. mat was shipped in wrong frame was damaged etc) I'm sorry. but we will give you a call as soon as it is finished" nailed it!
"but my form says it would be ready today" ...................................are you serious? i just got done telling you why it's not done!! plus, it's an ESTIMATED DATE! as stated above the date printed on the form!
"again, i'm sorry (re-explain the problem apologize again)"
"i wold like to speak with the manager" it's a freaking FRAME!!!

and that is about how it goes.

Food

Larabar, the almost unbelievably simple, sweet and tasty and chewy and wonderful. Larabar has been supplying my quick snack cravings since, oh, I was alive. I was really a little shocked to hear that it was being sold to General Mills, and before you start up about how a business is a business to make money (I am fully aware, but quality brings revenue...ah...another story), I was saddened because this will directly effect the future of raw food business. This is my passion, my lifestyle, my diet. Its what I put into my body, and I don't want it processed on the same assembly lines as pop-tarts, or whatever GM makes that I work very hard NOT to eat.

Bottom line; I'm super bummed because it was the easiest accessible, and well priced Raw food bar on the market. It was only a matter of time.

M4C

I saw you while I was coming home from lunch, you where wearing a tight Chicago Cubs t-shirt, a brown ringer, it was way to tight and your muscles buldged while you drank your tan colored iced coffee. Anyways, our eyes met, and I just hope you didn't get the asumption that I was checking you out, there was a really nice silver Lexus Hybrid behind you, and I couldn't get my eyes off it. Apologies for any confusion I might have created.

Now Available from Stones Throw, Madvillian boxed set. Wow. I am opposed to most comic stylings, but this is pure simple beauty, with vivid colors, a tight T shirt (Nominee Best Rolled L's), a real cassette, a cd, and a vinyl! Sign me up.

Original Truth

In continuing with the Japanes brand theme, here is one brand I have the utmost respect, or, appreciation for the concept. Not to mention the store in Aoyama is GORGEOUS.

hello from texas.

ok, so as the school year kicks off, and everyone begins to stress over tests and homework, i will be calibrating with nate to get a portfolio together. it has been a while since i have posted, so i am at a loss for words. i guess i'll just tell you what i've been up to.

for the most part, i have been working, trying to save up... which is proving to be harder then the books say.  but, when i am not working or mindlessly riding around dallas looking for places to waste time, i have been painting and drawing. (a lack of color)
songs for drawing.
1. The Light - The Album Leaf
2. Festival - sigur ros
3. Komponent (Telefon Tel Aviv Remix) - Apparat
4. breakfast at rhiz - b. fleischmann
5. line of best fit - death cab for cutie
6. repose in blue - eluvium

just last night
i was over at my cousins house for her birthday.
she had gone to Florida or something and had taken pictures of her trip.
and she a Sony HDTV and we were ganna look at the pictures on the big screen.
she had all the pictures on her camera and was going to plug it into the tv and watch them as a slide show. BUT... first the memory card was not the right kind for the TV (the camera was sony too) so then she tried to transfer the to a different camera with the right memory card. but for some reason they were put into a folder on the card and we could not access them form the camera. SO, she delated all the picture on the card, and REput them BACK onto the card and FINALY! we could watch them on the TV, BUT WAIT! NO! there is a menu that takes up about have the screen! so them it took us about ten minuets to figure out how to get it off... and i'm not technologically challenged at all! on a daily basis i help my sister with her computer troubles OVER THE PHONE! but could not figure out how to view pictures on a TV! GOSHH!

I dream of a world that uses only ONE kind of cord and ONE kind of memory card and everything will be easy to use, i mean REALLY easy to use!

all in all it took us about 45 minuets to get the picture up and running.

Fashion

In lew with popular belief, I did used to aspire to become a fashion designer, I wanted it to be my life. I spent the greater part of my mid teens hopeing to become a fashion designer. This is ulitimatly what brought me to New York, and apperently what brought me to my demise...

...Now obviously I don't believe that loada, but it is a theory that I play around with from time to time. I like to think about what key desicions brought me to current situations. What was the impulse, did I think about the outcome? What hindered my from sucess, what changed my mind? Looking in retrospect, I really have no desire to become a fashion designer, this was simply an enthusiastic and very femanine thirteen year old with no public schoolrooms to mold his thinking. I was allowed to let my imagination run free, and it ran into high fashion. Granted, I think I was pretty good for a thirteen year old...I would sit in my room, turn on Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky (not really "fashion" music, but we'll let it slide) and sketch clothes.

Then I would run upstairs and, in a haste, make some Ramen.

Then it was back down to my little dungeon (this is what my family called my basement room, where I spent four years).
Sometimes I would scan these images, I think I only scanned one or two, but non-the-less, I scanned em, and archived them (I will later find that Archiving would have been a crucial thing to get in the habit of doing, sadly enough, it never did, and still does not happen to this very day).

Bio Home

One of my goals to achieve in this life is to build, and live in a completely self sufficient "modular" home. I know this is the cliche dream of any aspiring designer, architect or just anyone who is smart. But its ok, I am exempt from this cliche as I am neither smart, nor am I a designer, nor am I a budding architect. I just have this compulsive desire to build one out of light color wood, and corrugated metal, and bamboo flooring, the whole nine yards, it would even jut out on the edge of a small hill in some grasslands, if not in Colorado, then in an exotic foreign country, possibly the flatlands of South Africa. My module would be provide its own electricity from the sun, it would have a roof garden, it would have its own fireplace, and the entire think would be windows so that in the summer you could open up the side of the house to catch a breeze with the fan running.

Later on, when I am about thirty seven, my module would appear on the cover of I.D. Magazine, or Architects Digest. I would be wearing probably a flannel, some sort of ill fitting light washed jeans, and a pair of horrendous boating shoes, or cranky New Balances. I would be very tired looking, probably wearing glasses and without a haircut for the past 2 years (due to the stresses of building a module, on a budget!).

Either way, it would be a fun goal to achieve, after my Agency settles itself. Hopefully soon.

Dad,

I have not forgotten about the items brought up in the letter. I would like to be a little more knowledgeable about the situation first. A few things I would like to know from you (and Ken can back me up on this). At the current moment, what is your Annual Salary? Also, how much do you owe in Taxes, I am under the impression it is around $65,000, and monies owed to your parents as well, as stated in the divorce decree, can you prove this with documentation?

The easiest way to prove your income would be to provide a recent pay stub or bank transfer as opposed to simply stating it in an email.

Ken Phalen said I was entitled to be aware of this information, and I can have him back that up.

Thanks!
Nathan

Music

"Dear Nate,
I received your email but have been on the road traveling. I am visiting Mimi and Grandad in PA and then will be visiting Kathy's family this week.

Nathan, as I have stated, I always welcome a relationship with you if you should come to me with a change of heart and show that you want something other than money from me. I love you dearly. However, Nathan, this letter you wrote me is absolutely disrespectful. It is crass for you to talk to your father this way. Let me state in no uncertain terms - a relationship between a father and son is not based on finances. It is totally out of bounds to expect me to answer financial questions from my child. I need to let you know right now that I do not plan to respond to any further requests for information about my finances. I certainly have no need to be put on the trial stand by my son. This is just not the way to speak or write to a parent. I gave you a general picture of my situation in my last letter, and that was more than enough. It is becoming evident that you have no concern for me or for any genuine relationship between us. It is also deeply disturbing that you show no concern or respect for your grandparents.

God tells us in many places (Proverbs 19:16, Ephesians 6:2,3 for example) the consequences of not honoring your parents and even tells us in the fifth commandment : "honor your father and mother, which is the commandment with promise, that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth". I am not seeing honor or respect.

Nathan, I repeat what I said in my last letter: I did all I could to set you on a good path in life. I tried to give you every advantage. You chose to walk your own path. I believe that you will find that you might have a lot of pain to go through before you find that there is a better way. I do worry about your path leading to disastrous consequences or ruin as you pay the price for foolish actions. I'm concerned for your soul. I do not think that complaining will help, but a changed heart and attitude will.

I repeat that I have deep and unconditional love for you. I will continue to keep the door open for a future relationship. I pray that some day it would be real and not just about your desire for money. Always feel free to write me. I am open to having a real father and son relationship with you, one based on respect for the dignity of each other, and the unique and irreplaceable love that only a father and son can share, as I have enjoyed so much with my own father. As I said, I will be in the vicinity of NYC on the16th of August. I would love to get together. If you'd like to, just let me know. You are daily in my prayers.

Love,
Dad"

Silly Gimmicks.

Smallest Font, Check
Bold, Check
Veranda, Check.

When I was in Japan, I couldn't get enough of Janglish, my version of Spanglish, the commeners mutant mix of Spanish and English to create a horrifying verbal nightmare. There is probably a version for every language, though I can't really imagine ukranglish, or swenglish, but the one I am speaking of is the naive, and forgivible Janglish, the mix of the cutsey Japanese with the do-or-die, balls to the wall, "Rock N' Roll" English language that is so commenly mispercieved by our lovely Japanese friends. The most comment, and funniest place to see this is on serious streetwear brands, which are as essential two Japanese teens as bottled water, ematch.com, and lip balm are to mid fourties single woman in the US of A. I loved it so much I ended up buy some T shirts while I was there. Now mind you, these are not Kmart stylings, these are the best of the best, the coolest of the cool in Japan, this is what a Japanese skater who has a dad who is an Architect, and Architects in Japan make BIG money! Large, large stacks of monies. Lots of it, like...lots.

Silly Things, said fashions in question, opened up a shop in Hong Kong recently, and opened with some of the silliest shirts I have seen in some time. Note: Opening up shops with exclusive content is how these people do business.

Check out the picture for visual ref.

FYI: The shirt on the lower left says "I keep on asking to myself having a wild time / What is the life? WACKO MARIA all you need is love".

Phew *wipes sweat off brow* that was such a stessful mix of 60s rock, psychodelica mind babel, and Catholisism. ALl I know, is this shot will get you killed in the hood...like, straight up.

Style

I used to buy shoes all the time, I was a by no means a BBC wearing "sneaker head" though, I don't carry a bottle of mouthwash, I dont wear rock and republic jeans, I dont own 8 supreme fitted caps, or wear purple and yellow...but I did buy a ton of shoes, mainly Dunks. I went to Japan for a few months a while ago, and had a revilation that my new favorite shoe was the Nike Air Max 360's. Now all I buy is Nike Air Max 306's. Not 95's...360's.

I am about to be really excited about dunks again. Yep. Perfect.

Eat

Find Goodness In Things That Are Real...
A Simply, Easy, and Giving Meal
Sal Anthony's @ 17th Street, Manhattan, New York USA

What it is:

Inexpensive and simple Raw take out. smoothies, and fresh juices. (It's also an Organic Garden Center).

What to get:
They offer about 8 or 9 different options, ranging from a nori wrap to a pannini. I've been their four or fives times, and have gotten a pannini every time. The marinated mushroom pizza slice is also SUPERB. I would steer clear of the corn options, not only is corn terrible for the body, but it just looks so unappleaing, a cut of raw corn on the cob. The "chocolate cookie" is also nothing to die over, un-creativly using walnuts as a base (and most of the cookie itself), the taste is rather bland. They were obviously going for chewiness, while severly loosing flavor! Not the case for their Pannini's though, soft flax bread (is this possible!) with a guacomole spread, and stuffed to the brim with well cut veggies and greens. Not to mention the price tag hangs pretty low at...$6, a far, far, far cry from the $20 entrees at neighboring Pure Food & Wine.

Off Key

I realize that the posts have been a little scattered, off topic, and irrelevent to "simple lifestyle design", but I am not apologetic, see, this is simple lifestyle design, I live it. What I do, what I think about, what I listen to, the images I see, they are a part of my "lo-key" existance. So, the posts are just better design ideas in the mainstream sense, but to get a look into the lives of people who live it.

Sleep Dep. / Raw Diet = Man Machine

I work two jobs.  I do this to uphold my expensive raw diet, I can't live properly without it, so I need to supplement my lowly income to be able to afford it. In doing so, I have taken on a ridiculous schedule that consists of:

9:30AM - 6:30 or 8:30 PM @ First Job
9:30PM - 1:30AM (Sleep)
2:00AM - 7:00AM @ Second Job
7:30AM - 8:45AM (Sleep)

That is roughly 5 hours of interrupted sleep per day.  I drink about 5-6 Green Juices, Cocao Smoothies, and Fresh Salads per day to keep myself alive, but at this point my body is literally shaking and convulsing.  My brain is functioning on overdrive, but my muscles are dying.  I think the supplements (Maca, Cacao, Etc) that are making my brain stay up are not working in conjunction with my blood flow and muscle schedule.  They need to rest, but I am not letting them!  It's been a week now, I honestly dont know how much longer I can keep this up for.  Probably another week then its quits.  I need sleep, badly.  Or I will get fired at the job that I cannot get fired at.  Shoot.

Sleepless Playlist:

Takagi Masakatsu - Botanica
Mogwai - Katrien

Music

Amongst My "Pleasently Surprised" pile of music I thought was shit, but was wrong, I found Kid Cudi.
Resident to San Fran, and generator of synthetic lyrical stylings. Interesting enough to keep me engaged, and some dope beat make this EP, and all the leaked songs worth my precious iPod time (trust me, its precious, sooo precious, oh so precious). Some songs, namely Is There Any Love, are a bit on the weird R&B-whiney-Tpain joint that I'm not interested in, but The Prayer is extremely awesome. Bloc Party name, Band of Horses sample, amazing lyrics. Woweee.

Recommended; Kid Cudi - Martian (Ft. Crookers)

In other news; People start pronouncing Crookers properly. Crook-ers. Not Croakers. These arent geezed out old men. DUH!

NB&WB's The Celebration

Launching soon. Top Secret. Will take the world by storm. No Joke.

Oct. 2008 \ NB+WB's The Celebration \ Media Uncovered

Life Woes for August

Can I live? There are a few things that bug-the-hell-outta-me-really-badly, and I will take this gorgeous, warm summer day to reflect, and enrage myself about them. Please note: If you fall prey to any of my ramblings, just smile and walk away, they are infact directed at you. That is, obviously, the reason I wrote them...sucker.

Design School Grads: Oh, "Design School", how you've really flooded the job market with cookie cutter PS3 Creative Suit robots. Thats the expensive version of Photoshop for all you "am's". I see you fresh out of SVA, dressed to the nines in clean pressed slim jeans, a nice olive v-neck t-shirt with something rediculous (like a boombox, or cropped floral shoulder pattern that you designed). I see you walking through DUMBO on the way to your studio, you are three years into your unpaid internship for a second rate (intelligent) hip-hop magazine, and the CEO has no plans to put you on payroll anytime soon. Granted, your profficieny on the powermac, and speedy production rate are suberb, your creative juice just ain't all there. I know, its tough trying to cut it in this industry, trust me, I'm trying! But if you don't have it, you just don't have it, and thats what design comes down to, design, and not Qwark skills, damnit!

Design School / School In General: This is why the Design School Grad with "sick nasty" administrative skills who sifts through the resumes at Crispin + Porter won't give me the time of day. Bummed.

Most Album Releases Circa 2008: I dont know what it is, but music is really sucking something sour this year. Does it have something to do with rapper newest infatuation with electronica, now electronica artists are trying to dissasociate themselves from the creeping genre? Is it because three fucking awesome releases clouded over ones that would normally be major any other year, given the fact that said three releases never got released. Or is it the fact that I'm just becoming an old geezer who doesn't age gracefully? "Now see, music these days, there is just no spirit involved, its just so generic!" Egh, man I hope not.

Shwazie / Shwayzee / Shawasse: Sorry bro, but the formulaic black hipster / white hipster (who digs his black friends appreciation for his roots no matter how hard he tries to disconnect from it) friendship makes for some very uninteresting TV, and even less interesting music, and even less interesting music vid-errr. At least 19 year old female residents of Williamsburg and Upper East Side (Trust me, the 19 year old female population is increasingly similar) have something to rejoice about. I guess.

Direction Nuts: The genius who came up with the directions for Ikea products is God. No words, pictures that make as much sense as cavemonster drawings, its a perfect formula to piss off any Swiss Army Knife weilding direction nerd. Just build the damn thing so it stays up! People who follow to much direction, at any point in their life, and for whatever reason really get under my smooth olive toned skin. "This card says that this is the Gallery listed on this pre-planned gallery walk" - Guy questioning his positioning. "Yep, its the place listed on that card, but we are a gallery on every other day too, its pretty obvious, look at the 20 foot super graphics hanging on the wall, dick head" - Me. "Well, in that case I guess I'll take a look around" - Guy, hesitent that this is indeed the place that was recommended for his gallery walk, even though its obviously a gallery.

Album_Presets_Apacalypso_2008

I have never been a sponge to The Presets, I don't "believe the hype" so to speak, and my extensions with the band go as far as hearing 'Are You The One' in every hipster club in NYC last summer, remixes et al.  I appreciate some of their industrial style instrumentals on Beams (Black Backround exclusively), but there is something about his voice that just, irks me.  I don't share whatever deep obsession he has with susceptible girls in dark lit clubs.  Since I haven't been following them, I had no idea they just released a new album until yesterday, Apacalypso.

Appropriately sharing the same name as an embarrassing Mel Gibson failure, Apacalypso is pretty much a repeat of Beams, sans the instrumentals.  Voice still ends on an obnoxious high note, songs still about girls in clubs, doing crazy things, sweating with "his people", acting crazy, partying, girls, clubs, eyes, eye movement, crazy club activities, sweat.

I played this song from my recently added playlist on my ipod, so I heard the entire thing from the last song to the first, and I was starting to get really excited!  I might actually enjoy a Presets album?  Really?  The last song on the album "Anywhere" is actually really pretty, I really enjoy it, it will most definitely get a lot of play time, hell, it even made its way into my Viva-Radio playlist!  I love it!  Thats pretty much the extent of my love for this album.  The rest is annoying, obnoxious, and just super hard to listen to.   Aeons is somewhat like an instrumental version of Anywhere, so its nothing horrible.  But nothing amazing.  Semi-Epic Giorgio Moroder stylings, stealing everything about 80s electronica right down to the chamber style drum hit.

The rest is a poor attempt at romantic electronica.  Sleazy vox, boring beats, nothing new, nothing worth buying.  My recommendation?  Buy "Anywhere" on iTunes, and skip the rest.

4/10  (Simply for Anywhere)  If "Anywhere" was a Single...7.5/10 (thats high in my book).

iMac.

Apples is the essence of simple.

If you are looking to get a new computer, or are just fed up with you dell xpc200XR3000 or what ever its called, I strongly recommend getting an iMac.
And here's why.

First, cords.
An iMac uses, at most, three cords (mouse, keyboard, power supply). There is a wireless option as-well, which means you literally have one cord.  You might think cords are not that big a deal, but dealing with a can be one of the worst experiences of your life. I have always been agents cords. All mac's come equipped with an "airport card" which is a wireless card for broadband internet.
Since all iMac's have built in Bluetooth, setting up your wireless mouse and keyboard is a cinch. Still not convinced? Take a look at the picture below.

Which one would you pick?

Next reason to get a mac, they are just easy to use.
I have been using mac's for as long as I can remember. I have tried to use a windows based computer before, but could not figure out how to use it. With Apple's resent release of OS X (Leopard, an updated operating system) it's even easier to use. Finding files is as easy as 123 minus the 2 and 3. Just type in the file name in "spotlight", Leopard's search feature. Can't remember what you named it? Type in some key words and Spotlight'll find it in a flash. If you used iTunes before, you'll be right at home with Leopard. iMacs are ready to go right out of the box, so just plug in and your set. Apples does it's best to make things easy for it's users, and does a fanatics job.

Mac Os X "Leopard" desktop.

sorry I was unable to find a screen shot of Windows Vista on their website.

What I find great about Apple is the fact that they do it all. They make the computers and make the software. There is one version of Leopard, so no hassle when deciding what version to get. Simple design. Every hardware they make is very well built. Easy to upgrade, if later on you decide your ganna want the four gigabytes of RAM or what ever.

Apple has been making all-in-one computers for a long time. The all-in-one design makes it easy to set on your desk, and not have to worry about where to but some huge box.  Other computer companies are just starting to come out with an all-in-one design.

So remember, if your going to get a new computer, go for the real deal, get a Mac.
